Reading is fun(damental)

Richard Rayner reviews the Paris Review Interviews II in the LA Times. I wish I could find the promo excerpts I got at BEA — Faulkner was gloriously cranky. Well, now the whole thing is available (and on sale at Powell’s).

The Big Read plays big in Peoria — ok, nearby, in Canton. David Kipen says someday, he’d like to bring The Big Read to “a real microdot of a town.” I’ve got one word for you, David: Marfa.

The NY Times is doing its own kind of big read, in which editor Sam Tanenhaus leads an online discussion of Great Books (very big G, very big B). Beginning with War and Peace.

Out in blogland, a Russian Reading challenge is brewing for 2008, byo reading list.

At Largehearted Boy, Jeff Parker recommends a punk playlist to go with his book Ovenman. (Descendents, Descendents, Descendents).

Matt Cheney has read lots of Doris Lessing; he does a thoughtful roundup of her books. The Valve looks at the critical and academic perceptions of her: as a feminist, a science fiction writer, an African and/or Brit.

Although this has nothing to do with books, I could look at The Sartorialist’s street fashion photos for hours. Do people in Paris really dress that well? I suppose they do. It is Paris, after all.
