Read This! It’s Firmin week at the LBC. Firmin, the first novel by Sam Savage, is about a rat who, erm, devours literature. To learn why you should read it, check out the discussion. Or chime in.

Today the LBC announced that our Read This! book for Fall 2006 is Firmin by Sam Savage, published by Coffee House Press.

Firmin is about a highly literate rat who got so smart by munching on books in a used bookstore in Scollay Square in Boston in the 1960s. Don’t worry, he’s not precious: he’s far more Notes From the Underground than Flowers for Algernon. He likes girlie movies and playing piano, this rat. And he’s funny. And erudite. And he loves books like crazy.

Read Ed’s essay on what he loves about Firmin at the LBC. We’ll be talking having fun there discussing Firmin all week.

The LitBlog Coop has announced the three fall nominees, all available now for grabbing and reading before discussion ensues. As I’ve had a taste of each of them, I’m happy to say you can’t go wrong. Just pick one and have at it.

The smart folks at the LitBlog Coop have begun the discussion of their crop of 4 eminently wonderful summer reads. What is the final Read This selection?  Michael Martone’s Michael Martone, a kind of non-autobiography.

I don’t feel icky about praising the fabulous-looking, talented and all-around brilliant folks at the LitBlog Coop for now, because this discussion and selection was made entirely without my help. In fact, I’m still plugging away at the first of the 4 novels on the list. But starting next round, no more compliments from me, because they’ve invited me to join in, and I’m thrilled. So take a look at their summer reads, which are really an excellent batch. That my completely (for now) unbiased opinion.
