Online freelancing has this problem. There is always somebody else in a different country to whom the same amount of money would seem a lot more than it does to you.

For newbies, especially, who might just be moving from writing for free to writing for pay, any pay counts?

I feel that the problem originates elsewhere, in the standardization (or not) of prices. There aren't fixed intermediate, moderate, advanced, top rates for various kinds of projects that are readily available. How would a newbie know whether it's an appropriate payment or not?

i heard an angry freelance photographer say this to me at a freelancers panel last year: craigslist is taking the bottom out of our industry. it's so true. the worst part is that there are scads of people out there so desperate to be published and paid anything at all, that they don't realize they are part of the problem when they accept jobs for so little money. i can't tell you how frustrated i get, daily, when i look at craigslist posting "opportunities" for "professional" writers to churn out 5-10, 500-word articles at $5 apiece. can you imagine the amount of writing one of these professionals would have to do to earn a living wage? it makes me sick. sick. sick. SICK! i get filled with rage about it, too.
